German Regionalliga Bayern: Everything You Need to Know

The German Regionalliga Bayern, or the Bavarian Regional League, is the top tier of the Bavarian football league. Along with the Regionalliga West, Regionalliga Südwest, Regionalliga Nord and the Regionalliga Nordost act as the fourth level of football in the country behind the Bundesliga, 2. Bundesliga and 3. Liga.

Regionalliga Bayern was inaugurated after the 2011-12 season. Replacing Regionalliga Süd in this area with teams in the division also playing in the Bavarian Cup. Both competitions are administered by the Bavarian Football Association.

The German Regionalliga Bayern is naturally not recognised as one of the stronger leagues around Europe. But, the fact that Bayern Munich II has played in the division means some of the more promising players often take part in its matches. Thus keeping the quality as high as possible.

How Things Work in the Regionalliga Bayern

As with all of the divisions within the German fourth tier, 18 teams take part every year in this league. Each playing their 17 opponents once at home and once away for a 34-game season.

Games in the German Regionalliga Bayern tend to be end-to-end, producing great entertainment and lots of goals. Right now, the league produces over 3 goals per game. While it’s rate of 47% of wins for home teams, makes for some reliable bets too.

Most games are played on Saturday afternoons in this league, with one or two Friday evening games.

Who Goes Up and Who Goes Down?

While four teams are relegated from Germany’s 3. Liga, the fact that five different divisions make up the fourth tier means there’s not a lot of promotion options. Only the champions of each league actually get the chance to move up.

The champions from this division, alongside those from Regionalliga Südwest and Regionalliga Nord go straight to 3. Liga while the winners of Regionalliga West and Regionalliga Nordost must play-off for the final place.

Up to four teams can do down; the bottom two in the division for certain while the 15th and 16th placed teams must enter a play-off. Relegated teams move down to either the Bayernliga Nord or the Bayernliga Süd.

Who Are the Biggest Names?

The current champions are Bayern Munich II, essentially the reserve side for the great club, who now play in the 3. Liga and this has meant some of Europe’s top future stars have taken part in the Regionalliga Bayern.

The league in this guise doesn’t have too much history having only been around since 2012, but since then such recognisable teams as former top-flight outfit 1860 Munich have taken part, that side in fact winning the league in 2017/18 and attracting an average of more than 11,000 people per game during the season.

Betting Markets

The combination of seeing a high amount of goals across most matchdays and also a more than a fair proportion of home wins means some good betting opportunities, as long as you stick to the right markets.
Most of the larger online bookmakers will offer markets on Regionalliga Bayern games, these being the best ones to work with:

  • 1X2 Accumulator Betting – the relatively high number of winning home teams in this league means the ordinary home/draw/away markets are good for us, especially when putting some solid home favourites into accumulators. Around 4 home teams will win in Regionalliga Bayern each week and it is often not difficult to pick them out.
  • Handicap Betting – when finding not only a solid favourite but one of the teams that contribute to the average 3+ goals per game in this league, we can usually pick out one or two each week to back at -0.5 on the handicap which increases are odds.
  • Total Goals Betting – when the better sides play at home in the Regionalliga Bayern, backing over 2.5 or perhaps over 3.5 in the total goals market in certain games can lead to a profit. In some cases, you can combine home wins with +2.5 goals too to stretch out an even healthier advantage.
