Isthmian League Division One Betting

The Isthmian Premier League sits at the third level of the non-league football system in England. The seventh overall, it is fed by three separate regional Isthmian Division One league; North, South Central and South East which are placed within the fourth tier of the non-league game.

This is a good level of football overall and the games tend to be very exciting to watch. Despite this level being described by some as ‘amateur’ or ‘grassroots’, the players know what they are doing by and large. They can be relied upon to get the job done from a betting point of view if you know where to look.

Isthmian League Division One Betting: Structure of the League

Each of the three divisions features 20 teams every season. They play each other once at home and once away for a 38-game regular season. In fact, the format is very similar to most of the major leagues around Europe.

A split is needed at this level of football as it is played in what is a very densely populated area of the country, meaning many teams competing so do look out for all three leagues when assessing fixtures and thinking about having a bet.

Promotion and Relegation

At the end of the regular 38-game season, the champions of the North, South Central and South East divisions are promoted to the Isthmian Premier League. Teams 2-5 from each division enter a play-off with the ultimate winners of that end of season competition joining the champs at non-league Premier level the following season.

The bottom three teams from each division are relegated and replaced by sides from various other regional feeder leagues, such as the:

  • Combined Counties League
  • Eastern Counties League
  • Hellenic League
  • Essex Senior League
  • Spartan
  • Midlands League

The Biggest Teams in the Isthmian Leagues

The goal in Division One is simply to be promoted. This gets them to non-league Premier level and is within touching distance of playing in the National League which these days is mostly professional.

In recent years, champions of the various levels and regional leagues within Isthmian have included Worthing, Hayes & Yeading United, Billericay Town and AFC Hornchurch as well as recognisable clubs such as Wealdstone, Sutton United, Whitehawk, Grays Athletic and Dover Athletic.

Many decent players who have ultimately made it to the National League or even above have started their careers within the Isthmian Division One level.

Key Betting Markets in the Isthmian Division One

In the regular season alone, more than 1,100 games are played at this level across the three divisions which allows us a proper idea of how these games tend to play out as we have a big sample to look at.

Rather unsurprisingly there are plenty of goals, with around 3.3 per game being scored which opens us plenty of potential opportunities. Home wins are a little lower than the average at approximately 42%, draws are normal at 23% and away wins are high at 35% which comes down to the fact that there are fewer intimidating crowds and less harsh travel times.

With all of that in mind, here is how to best play the Isthmian Division one level from a betting point of view:

  • Away Wins – there will always be plenty of 7/4, 2/1 and even more, knocking around for away teams in these leagues and this is where the value is. With 35% of all games going to away sides, bearing in mind you can ignore the potentially obvious home wins when the top teams host those at the bottom, you can very definitely make some profit by taking a chance on travelling clubs at decent prices.
  • Total Goals – to enhance the above and end up betting on almost all games if you wish to, you can include the bigger clubs playing at home by betting the total goals market. Betting on over 2.5 or even over 3.5 can often pay off, those at the upper end of these divisions often scoring plenty of goals all season long.
  • Both Teams to Score – away wins are value, home teams score plenty and often to nil when playing the minnows but those from 5th/6th place down to around 14th often share plenty of goals in their games which brings in the ‘yes’ on the BTTS coupon.
