Spanish Segunda Division B Group 3

The Spanish Segunda Division B is the third tier of league football in Spain. It has been the case for a long period of time. There are four different groups in the Spanish Segunda Division B, each of which contains twenty different clubs.

These are a mix between senior teams and reserve teams from some of the bigger teams in Spain. It is the Royal Spanish Football Federation that is in charge of the organization of the Spanish Segunda Division B.

The premier league for football in Spain is La Liga. Next in the rankings is the Segunda Division, then followed by the Spanish Segunda Division B. Underneath the Spanish Segunda Division B is the Tercera division. There are certain rules regarding the promotion and relegation of reserve teams in the Spanish Segunda Division B, being dependent on what the respective senior team has been doing in terms of its league standings.

The historical background of Division B

The Spanish Segunda Division B dates back many years in Spain, having undergone numerous changes along the way. The first-ever iteration of the Spanish Segunda Division B was in 1929. For many years, it was the third tier of football in Spain, before becoming the fourth tier of football in the nation for a number of decades.

It was in the 1977/1978 season that the Spanish Segunda Division B once again became the third tier of football in the country. The Tercera Division once more became the fourth tier.

Initially, there were two different groups that encompassed the Spanish Segunda Division B. Then there was a period when there was just one single group, with 22 clubs being a part of this division in the Spanish Segunda Division B. It was from the 1987/1988 season onwards that the Spanish Segunda Division B was divided into four separate groups, each having a total of twenty different clubs in them.

The make-up of the Spanish Segunda Division B these days

In its current form, four different groups are making up the entire Spanish Segunda Division B. Each of these sections will have 20 different teams battling it out each season against each other. By the end of the season, the leading four teams in each of the groups will then go into a separate competition series which is a way to determine which four teams will successfully earn promotion up into the Segunda Division.

The sixteen teams will battle it out against each other in a knockout series, with the four teams left at the end of these games gaining the ticket for promotion. This will then see the bottom four teams in the Spanish Segunda Division B having to be relegated down into the Spanish Segunda Division B.

There are rules in place on reserve teams that are playing in the Spanish Segunda Division B. For example, a reserve team can only gain promotion out of the Spanish Segunda Division B if its senior team is playing in the La Liga. If the senior team is in the Segunda Division, then the next best team in the group's standings will take the reserve team’s position in the playoff series.

If the senior team gets relegated down into the Spanish Segunda Division B, its reserve team will also then be relegated out of the Spanish Segunda Division B, down to the Tercera Division.

There will be a similar playoff system in place for those four teams that finish at the bottom of each of the Spanish Segunda Division B groups. These games will take place over two legs, one being at home and the other being an away game. Naturally, the teams that win over the course of the two legs will then be safe from relegation. The four teams that lose out will get relegated.

Currently, in the Spanish Segunda Division B Group 3, there are a number of reserve teams playing in it. This includes FC Barcelona B, Espanyol B and Villarreal B.
