The Vonovia Ruhrstadion is also known simply as the Ruhrstadion is a football stadium that you will be able to find in Bochum, Germany. The stadium plays host to the home games of VfL Bochum and it has a capacity of about 29,2300. It was built in 1921 and it has undergone a number of renovations over the years.

History of the Vonovia Ruhrstadion

1911

In 1911, the Spiel und Sport Bochum leased a meadow from a nearby farmer and used it as the home ground of the football team. The first game that took place there was against VfB Hamm, with 500 people being in attendance.

1921

A stadium was not built at the site until the First World War was over, doing so in 1921. The original capacity of the Vonovia Ruhrstadion was more than 50,000 but this has been decreased over the years due to a number of renovations.

1976

The first major expansion of the Vonovia Ruhrstadion came between 1976 and 1979. It was significant work, with it technically being an entire rebuild, but in a legal sense, it was called an expansion. When this work was ongoing, Bochum had to play its home games at Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion.

1983

A number of notable musical acts performed at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion over its history, including David Bowie in 1983. Over the years, there have been a handful of international games to have taken place at the stadium, with three of them being friendly and one being a qualifying game for the FIFA World Cup in 1982.

2016

Over the past couple of decades, there have been numerous name changes of the Vonovia Ruhrstadion for sponsorship reasons. It has been called the Vonovia Ruhrstadion since 2016.

Created in 1848, VfL Bochum plays its home games at the Vonovia Ruhrstadion. The team has gone through a number of mergers with other clubs over the years. The club was a regular fixture in the top flight during the 1970s and 1980s before going through a bit of a rough patch.
