Arizona Cardinals

Arizona Cardinals

The Arizona Cardinals are an NFL team that have their base in the metropolitan area of Phoenix, Arizona. They currently compete in the NFC West division, playing their home games in the State Farm Stadium that initially opened in 2006.

The team is one of the oldest, having been established in Chicago in 1898 as an amateur side and then becoming part of the NFL in 1920. They were located in St. Louis from 1960 through to 1987 before setting up in Arizona in time for the 1988 season. They have won two NFL Championships and a single NFC Championship, doing so in 2008, when they lost out 27-23 to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl.

Arizona Cardinals Colours

In 1990 the team began playing in their distinctive red and white, and since then have alternated the colours for pants and jerseys according to the time of the season, sometimes playing in all-red.

Home Fields

The Cardinals have had three home fields since the mid-1960s. They played at the Busch Memorial Stadium 1966-1987, the Sun Devil Stadium on the Arizona State University campus 1988-2005, and have been based at State Farm Stadium since 2006.

The Cardinals’ tenure at the Sun Devil Stadium had been intended to be temporary, but the building of a new stadium was subject to many years of delay. Construction eventually began in 2003 and was completed in three years at a cost of some $455 million. The stadium has a capacity for general football games of 63,400. For special games and events, crowds have exceeded 70,000. The stadium hosted the 2007 and 2014 Super Bowls and is scheduled to also be the venue for the 2023 Super Bowl.

Arizona Cardinals Super Bowl loss

The Cardinals reached the Super Bowl in 2008 led by quarterback Kurt Warner, before losing 27-23 to the Steelers in the big game. It took place at the Raymond Jones Stadium in Tampa, Florida, with the result being in contention right down to the end of the game. The Steelers captured their sixth ever Super Bowl and their second title in four seasons. The Cardinals hadn’t won an NFL title since 1947, the longest drought among any of the teams in the league.

After Larry Fitzgerald scored a 64-yard touchdown with 2:37 left on the clock, it was looking good for the Cardinals. However, the Steelers went down the field and won after wide receiver Santonio Holmes scored a 6-yard touchdown with just 35 seconds remaining in the game. At the time, it was the most-watched Super Bowl ever, with an audience in the United States of 98.7 million people.

The Cardinals won the NFC West the following year but lost to the eventual Super Bowl winners, the New Orleans Saints, in the divisional playoffs. The Cardinals wouldn’t make the playoffs again until 2014, with the team having a franchise-best 13-3 record the next season. They lost to the Carolina Panthers in the NFC Championship game.
