Plumpton’s Easter Festival features two popular days of live racing, staged on Sunday and Monday of the holiday weekend.
Day one on Easter Sunday contains a seven-race card containing a good mix of hurdle and chase races, the day being highlighted by the feature event which is the Sussex Champion Hurdle. In this case, the race is a Class 2 Handicap run over two miles and is worth a cool £50,000.
The second day on Easter Monday is equally competitive and tends to draw in another good Bank Holiday crowd. The card features another seven races which are much more disparate, including a Juvenile Hurdle and a mares only race.
The feature race is the Sussex Champion Chase, the steeplechasing equivalent to Sunday’s big race carrying the same £50,000 purse. This time the handicap takes place over a near 2½-mile trip.
While well attended, this meeting faces terrific competition in terms of attracting horses and horsemen given that Chepstow, Fakenham and Huntingdon all race on the same day over jumps.
