The Arran Scottish Fillies’ Sprint Stakes, to give the race its full moniker, is a new event on the flat racing calendar having only been introduced to Ayr’s September Gold Cup meeting in 2017.
The inaugural race was won by star subsequent Group 1 winning mare Mabs Cross as a three-year-old, but only after the race was rescheduled for Musselburgh in October after the original race had unfortunately been rained off.
Staged over 5½ furlongs at Listed level, the Fillies’ Sprint Stakes is one of the feature races of day two (Friday) of the Gold Cup meeting and carries a prize fund of some £50,000, the day also incorporating the Ayr Bronze Cup and the Harry Roseberry Stakes.
Two of the first three runnings of the race were taken by two-year-olds in good times, hopefully leading to more bullet-like fillies taking this race in during future seasons.
