Scheduled for April 2024, the Scottish Grand National is the equivalent of the Grand National, north of the border. It often even features runners who have taken part at Aintree but perhaps fallen early.
Carrying the same Grade Three handicap status, the Scottish National is run over a four-mile trip, similar to its English counterpart with 27 fences to clear, and in carrying a prize fund of well over £200,000 it is a huge race in its own right.
This is the highlight of the yearly Scottish Grand National Festival and is supported by such events as the Scottish Champion Hurdle and the Future Champion Novices’ Chase among others.
It was first run at Ayr in 1966 having been initially staged at Bogside, popular winners include The Spaniard, Aintree winners Red Rum and Earth Summit, Willsford, Al Co, Joe Farrell and dual winner Vicente.
