Exeter Racecourse begins its traditional National Hunt season on the second Thursday of October with its Season Opener meeting, a very popular and long-awaited race day each season.
While the action on-course, strictly speaking at least, is not the best you’ll see around the Devon track, its place in the schedule provides a vital chance for horses trained around the south-west to get out and begin their chasing and hurdling seasons.
The featured event is the Class 3, £11,000 Handicap Chase over two miles and three furlongs. The race acts as a qualifying event for the Challenger Middle Distance Chase Series. It is backed up by a Handicap Hurdle for conditional jockeys, a Novices’ Hurdle, a Novices’ Handicap Hurdle, a Beginners’ Chase, and a Handicap Hurdle for the more experienced horses.
