A feature race every year at Arlington Park in Illinois is the massive Grade I event, the Secretariat Stakes. Named after one of the all-time greats of the game, the Secretariat is for three-year-olds only over a mile on the turf and carries a prize fund of $500,000.
This race day in August is one of the most important in the States, the Secretariat being just one of the significant races staged on the day.
Inaugurated in 1974, the Secretariat has been staged over various subtly different race distances with the 1¼-mile record held by Kitten’s Joy, now the sire of top 2019 three-year-old Roaring Lion and 2020 2000 Guineas winner Kameko.
Past winners over the various distances include Sing Sing, Hawkster, Honor Glide, Showing Up, Treasure Beach, Highland Reel, and Oscar Performance. The race holds plenty of significance for European-based trainers, given that it takes place on the grass.
