Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves from Leander, released in 2016, plays on a regular 5×3 format with 20 Paylines and whisks you away to an exotic desert oasis. It’s based on the famous Arabian Nights tale which, if you’re unfamiliar with it, follows Ali Baba as he takes on the band of robbers who have their bounty stored in a cave accessed with the words Open Sesame.
How to play
Set yourself up to play Ali Baba in the usual fashion, activating Autoplay if you wish to turn the reels for a set number of times without interruption.
Land matching icons from left to right on an active Payline to win. Symbols are related to the theme and encompass animals including a snake, monkey, camel and golden scarab beetle. Other icons incorporate a ring, snake charmer’s pipe, knife and drum, while your character emblems are Ali Baba himself and the Chief of Thieves.
Ali Baba and the 40 Thieves Special Features
The Wild is a female character (the dancing slave girl Morgiana), who can show up on any of the reels to help form winning combos, as she expands to take up all the emblems on that reel. As ever, she replaces all icons bar the bonus or Scatter. The latter is a bag of money and jewels, while there’s also an urn bonus symbol.
To launch this round, here called the Open Sesame free spins bonus, bag three free whirls icons on Reels 1, 3 and 5. The cool part of this feature is that you got to choose your level of risk. Take your pick from a hat-trick of options, incorporating fewer free spins with lower multipliers to the greater risk of more spins and higher multipliers.
It works like this:
- Low-risk choice: Up to 15 free whirls with four picks, a multiplier up to 4x
- Medium-risk choice: Up to 20 free whirls, six picks, a multiplier up to 5x
- High-risk choice: Up to 25 free whirls, eight picks, a multiplier up to 6x
The next stage is seeing a screen bearing various treasure chests. Choose six to enjoy multipliers and wager-free whirls as selected, according to your risk level.
However, if you go over your preset limits, you’ll be knocked back down to 10 free whirls plus a 1x multiplier.
Ali Baba (or Gold) Bonus Feature
Scoop a trio of free spins icons on the middle three reels, and in this round, you play as Ali himself. Choose from vases to win immediate cash prizes. However, there are monkeys itching to thwart you, on every corner.
Luckily, before the feature kicks off, you get up to a trio of Ali ‘protections’, which gives you an extra life if a monkey lurks in one of your chosen urns. However, if a monkey shows up in one of your vases once your lives have run out, it’s game over.
Ali Baba features a progressive jackpot of up to 250,000 coins.
Return to Player (RTP)
This is pretty RTP generous in Ali Baba, at 96.98%. The game is essentially mid-variance, with the option to choose your risk level in the bonus round, as mentioned above.
Ali Baba comes with a couple of cracking bonus features, especially as far as the free spins round is concerned. And it should appeal to a broad range of players, while, most importantly, being fun to play, with some nicely done visuals.
Give it a go in free demo mode in the first instance to see if it’s a game that works for you.
