Go head-to-head and pit your wits against the dealer in American Blackjack, the exciting casino card game available via 888, in which you chase the highest-value hand as you bet against the house. There are some slight variations from its European counterpart, which may affect your strategy, but essentially the rules and format remain the same in both.
One key factor that does set the American version apart is that, at any time, you can play one, three or five hands simultaneously.
How to play
Choose your betting limits and the colour of the table you’d like to play at – green, red, black and blue are all available. Ramp up the speed by staying in the default Turbo mode, or come out of it, and choose whether to go for one, three or five hands. Equally, you can enjoy a little background music or turn it off.
How to Play American Blackjack
Save your settings then select your chip value – chips are in the bottom right of your screen and available in various denominations. Place your bets and you’re good to go!
In this game, there are half a dozen 52-card decks, shuffled following each round. Once cards have been dealt, clearly no bet can be changed.
To kick off with, you and the dealer receive a couple of cards each. Both of yours face upwards, but one of the dealer’s faces downwards. Your aim is to reach 21 – without ever going over it.
Following the dealing of the first two cards, you can decide whether to draw further cards until you reach 21, or choose ‘Stay’. Going over 21 means an automatic loss, called a ‘bust’. Whatever hand the dealer has, yours is over immediately.
You also have the option to Stand, Hit, take insurance against the dealer getting a Blackjack, Double Down or Split your hand, as appropriate.
You can still win the hand if you have below 21. Choose a ‘Stay’ and you won’t get any extra cards. But the dealer must then draw cards to identify the winner.
Should the dealer’s first two cards total 16 or under, they draw further cards until they have 17 or higher, at which point they have to ‘Stand’.
At the end of each round, any payments are completed and, if you wish, you can begin a new session, either continuing with the same bets or starting new ones.
As you’d expect in a game like this, there are no bonus rounds, although you can place side bets for each playing hand.
Card values – and winnings
Cards 2 to 9 are played at face value. The 10, Jack, Queen or King cards are worth 10. Finally, you have the choice to make Aces high or low, i.e. worth 1 or 11.
A winning hand pays out at 1:1, a Blackjack at 3:2, insurance at 2:1 and even money at 1:1.
Return to Player (RTP)
RTP or Return to Player in American Blackjack is a high theoretical 99.52%.
