While there are now many different versions of the game available in casinos all around the world and online, Baccarat Chemin de Fer is the original baccarat format.
Why is baccarat seen as being so glamorous? Well, for one thing it has been part of the James Bond canon since way back in the first novel, Casino Royale, and features in many of the genre’s movies featuring Sean Connery and others.
How to play
Baccarat Chemin de Fer is the original version of this classic table game. It was introduced in France and remains the most popular baccarat variant.
Its name, “Chemin de Fer”, means iron road and was coined because the cards were placed in an iron box with the phrase predating its modern Gallic meaning of ‘railway’.
How to Play Baccarat Chemin de Fer
Six decks of cards are used in baccarat, all shuffled together. Players are seated around the table, or around a virtual one in online versions, with any discarded cards going into the centre.
Play is conducted to the right of the croupier and continues anticlockwise. At the beginning, the croupier and then all players will shuffle the cards in play order. The dealer shuffles one final time and the player to their left will cut the deck – though this is all automatic in online versions of the game.
When the play starts, one player at the table is the designated banker. That player also deals the cards. The position of banker passes anticlockwise around the table during the course of the game.
During each round, the banker wagers the amount they are willing to risk. All other players, in order, then declare whether to “go bank” which is to play against the entire current bank amount with a matching bet. Only one player can go bank and, if nobody does, players can then make their bets in table order.
If the total bets from all players are less than the bank, those observing may also bet up to the amount of the bank. Then, if total wagers from players are bigger than the bank the banker can choose to increase the bank to match it. If not, the excess wagers are removed in reverse player order around the table.
The banker will deal four cards, all face down. Two go to themselves and the other two are held in common by the players. Those with the highest individual bet are selected to represent the group of players.
There are a number of rules to learn in this game, but it’s worth it in the end. It is also way easier to play online than in a land-based casino.
Return to Player
Online, the typical Return to Player (RTP) percentage for baccarat is way over 98%.
