Description

Rugby league, never to be confused with rugby union, of course, is a quintessentially English sport but has begun to spread around the world with Europe and especially Australasia producing huge numbers of top players recognised around the globe.

Rugby League’s Biggest Competitions

With its roots firmly planted in the north of England, it’s not surprising that one of the biggest competitions in the world comes from that country but this is a sport that has spread rapidly around the world over the years.

Super League

The top northern-hemisphere rugby league competition, the Super League features 12 teams with ten of them from England, one from France and another from Canada. Wigan Warriors are the most successful side in the division, followed by St Helens.

National Rugby League

Australia is the other country to have taken this sport to heart and their NRL is a 16-team league led by 21-time champions the South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Rugby League World Cup
Now held every four years having originally been more disparate, the World Cup will now feature 16 international teams playing a total of 31 games.

Odds Available

In terms of match betting, things are kept pretty simple in Rugby League.  Punters can either bet on the 2-way or 3-way match betting, one a handicap that knocks out the tie with the other including it.  It can look like this:

Match Betting 2-way

Hull KR

Leigh

Handicap

-8.5   10/11

+8.5   4/5

To Win

2/5

2/1

Match Betting 3-way

Hull KR

Tie

Leigh

Handicap

-8.0   10/11

+8.0   16/1

+8.0   10/11

Result

2/5

20/1

2/1

Lots of spot bets or ‘props’ are available on games too, with everything from total points, the winning margin, try scorers and lots more besides on offer with most major firms.

Betting Terminology

Among other things, you will see these words and phrases listed when looking for a rugby league wager:

  • 1st Half Betting 2-way – similar to the match betting shown above, but only concerning the first half which is good if you fancy an outsider to start quickly against their opposition.
  • Total Points – bets concerning the total points scored in the match by both teams combined.
  • Tribet – as well as the normal match coupon, you can place bets on either team to win by 7 or more points or ‘any other result’ if you feel neither will happen.
  • Try-scorers – you can back players to score the first try, the last try or at any time in the game.

Tips for Betting

The biggest thing is to not bet on rugby league blind.  You should know a little about the sport, and its differences compared to rugby union before you place a bet.  While a vast array of markets are made available it often pays to stick with the main match betting options, betting wisely on the handicap if you feel the outsiders can do well.

Betting Offers

Special bets on try-scorers or enhanced outright competition winner odds are often produced by bookmakers for things like the World Cup, so be on the lookout for those, but using your general sports betting bonuses wisely if you know what to look for in rugby league can give you a leg up.
