Despite the Triple Crown being dominated by colts, the three-year-old fillies in the USA have a very good programme of races including this Grade I event, the Acorn Stakes at the amazing Belmont Park.
Run over a mile on the dirt track in early June, the Acorn is worth some $300,000 and is considered the first leg of the Triple Tiara along with the American Oaks at Saratoga and the Alabama Stakes at the same New York venue.
Inaugurated way back in 1931, this race has never been changed in distance and has only moved to another New York track on a few occasions, to Aqueduct for a time in the 60’s and 70’s. Since grading began, this has always been a Grade I race.
Winners of this great fillies’ event include Kiss Me Kate, Bayou, Deceit, Open Mind, Sharp Cat, It’s Tricky and the track record scorer in 2019, Guarana.
