The King Richard III Stakes is a Listed flat race that is open to horses that are at least four years old. It takes place every April at Leicester Racecourse and it has been taking place since 1978.
A handicap system is in place and there is a prize purse of £60,000 on offer. After being a Group 3 race for a while it dropped back to Listed status back in 2009.
One horse has managed to win the King Richard III Stakes on three occasions, being Warningford in 1999, 2001 and 2002. The flat track is pretty accommodating and is mainly downhill for the straight course to the halfway point before gradually rising towards the finish line. It is a good track for strong gallopers, particularly when there is a bit of rain.
