Sitting on an amazing schedule of races in early June alongside the Ogden Phipps, Manhattan Handicap, Just A Game Stakes and the Belmont Stakes is Belmont Park’s Metropolitan Handicap.
A Grade I event over a mile on the dirt track for three-year-olds and over, the race is otherwise known as the Met Mile carries a prize fund of $1.2million and has been on the schedule since way back in 1891.
Despite it being hard to win for the higher-rated horses as a handicap, the Met Mile has indeed been taken by some of the greats of the game down the years, including Native Dancer, Forego, Gulch, Holy Bull, Ghostzapper and more recently by Frosted and Mitole.
Winners of this race can go on to contest other major races and be considered leading contenders, not least the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile in November.
