One of two major Champion Hurdle trials to be staged each year at Wincanton along with February’s Kingwell Hurdle, the Elite Hurdle takes place every November on Badger Beers Silver Trophy day.
The race takes place over two miles and features eight flights of hurdles, the Elite Hurdle is a Grade 2 race was established as a Cheltenham event but was moved to Wincanton in 1994. Having been run for a time as a handicap, the Elite reverted to being a weight-for-age race in 2018.
The list of past winners of this race is indeed elite, including subsequent Arkle and Champion Chase winner Azertyuiop, Arkle winner Well Chief and Aintree Hurdle scorer Zarkandar who had also returned here to win the Kingwell Hurdle en route to Aintree.
Recent winners have also made their mark, Verdana Blue winning the Christmas Hurdle and Scottish Champion Hurdle since while Fusil Raffles was sent off 2/1 joint-favourite for the Christmas Hurdle too.
