The Goodwood Cup is a Group 1 flat race that is open to horses that are at least three years old. It has been taking place since its first renewal in 1812 and it is two miles in length. There is a handicap system in place and the total prize purse is £500,000, with the winner getting about £283,000.
Naturally, this is a historic race and is one of the mainstays of the racing season at Goodwood.
It has been a Group 1 race since 2017, leading to a significant increase in the prize money.
It is one of the best events in the region for stayers and is part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown along with the Doncaster Cup and the Gold Cup. It takes place as part of the first day of the Glorious Goodwood festival of racing at the end of July or the start of August.
