The Gordon Stakes is a Group 3 flat race that has been taking place since 1902. Three-year-old horses are able to enter and it is run over one mile and three furlongs. It is usually on the third day of the Glorious Goodwood meeting that takes place towards the end of July or the start of August.
A handicap system is in place and the first prize is almost £100,000, with the total prize pool being £175,000. It is often used as a trial race of the St. Leger Stakes, with nine horses, have managed to win both of these races.
Goodwood is a very tricky track, with a lot of nuances to consider. Speed and stamina are needed in equal amounts with an experienced jockey always being important in order to negotiate all of these different challenges.
