Cartmel’s popular Spring Bank Holiday meeting at the end of May features the £15,000 Grand Veterans’ Handicap Chase, the feature event of the day. The race takes place over 3 miles, 5½ furlongs and features 20 fences for the older horses only.
While the race is a huge hit around the country given the love for older horses in training, it is also unique given its location. Cartmel is a very small National Hunt track in Cumbria which features only nine days of racing a year.
The meeting containing the Grand Veterans’ Chase takes place over the Whit Holiday weekend and has become synonymous with holidaymakers who are taking in the racing while visiting the Lake District with the scenery and the layout of the track being pretty unique within the sport.
This race is backed up on the day by two other Class 3 races worth £12,000 each; handicap chase races over 2m1½f and 2m5f respectively.
