Run on the same busy Saturday as the Irish Derby and the Northumberland Plate, the Midsummer Stakes is one of Windsor’s higher quality events and is run at the very peak of the flat racing season.
Worth £35,000 and carrying Listed status, the race takes place over a mile and naturally, it’s the feature event of the afternoon. First run in 2004, the race carries the same status as a few of Windsor’s other events on paper but because of where it sits in the calendar it tends not to attract the very best.
That being said, previous winners Librettist, Winged Cupid, Nationalism, French Navy, Morando and Matterhorn all represented top connections and were ridden by the likes of Kerrin McAvoy and Frankie Dettori so the event has been capable of attracting some fairly fancy entries in its time.
