With just three reels across three rows and only a single Payline, high-volatility 888 Dragons from newer developer Pragmatic Play takes an obviously oriental theme.
There are Chinese characters above the reels, which are bordered by a golden frame with geometric patterns – plus 8 is a lucky number in Chinese culture, while dragons also feature strongly. The beasts here are twisted, and dragons in this format symbolise eternity.
As one waggish reviewer commented, Pragmatic Play certainly hasn’t reinvented the reel with 888 Dragons. There are no bells or whistles here, and no downloading is needed, so it’s perfect if you like simpler slots. There’s nothing in the way of special features or fancy graphics – just follow the dragons until you find the caves with their treasures within!
The game is a stripped-down version of 8 Dragons, all-singing, all-dancing five-reeler from the same operator.
How to play
The paytable is displayed to the left of the reels, and you can set your stake level at between a penny and a fiver, meaning all budgets and types of player are catered for. You can bet up to 10 coins on the one Payline.
To play, just place your bet and spin the reels; it really is as simple as that.
The aim of the game is to line up the dragons along the game’s horizontal Payline from left to right.
You can do this either using different or the same dragons, and you’ll find a grand total of three symbols here: the mythical creatures in gold and red, green and yellow or blue and a lighter blue.
(In fact, these dragons are the same as the stacked Wilds in the 8 Dragons game, but that’s by the by.)
Earn the top prize of 100x total stake by landing three of the golden dragons on the game’s one Payline. A 50x win is up for grabs should three green dragons fall into place, a 25x stake payout for three blue ones.
You also get a 5x stake payout for landing three mixed dragons on the Payline.
888 Dragons Special Features
The simplicity of the gameplay means there are no special symbols such as Wilds.
You won’t find any bonus rounds when playing 888 Dragons. As we’ve said, it’s a bare-bones kind of game. That could be considered a good or bad thing, depending on the kind of player you are.
Return to Player (RTP)
The high variance of 888 Dragons means bigger, less frequent wins. The RTP or Return to Player is 96.84%, which is pretty solid, and certainly higher than its cousin, 8 Dragons.
Give 888 Dragons a whirl in demo mode with no registration needed before you part with any real money. You’ll love it if you like going back to basics or just taking it easy with some no-nonsense gaming, but prefer snake-like dragons to lemons and watermelons.
However, with a lack of bonus features, experienced slots fans, in particular, may struggle to stay interested in this game for any length of time. Equally, it’s not as if you can’t also find plenty of other slots out there with an oriental theme.
But – what do you think?
