It’s certainly not every slot that’s based on a piece of classical music. But the hugely original Hall of the Mountain King Slot from Quickspin is based on Norwegian composer Grieg’s 1875 work of the same name, written as incidental music for a scene in Act 2 of the Ibsen play Peer Gynt. With a medieval fantasy theme, this game invites you to take to the rolling hills of the north to join a gang of royal trolls.
The slot, released in summer 2019, has a classic five-reel, three-row format with 20 Paylines. Expect to hear some majestic music in the form of the famous orchestral tune as you spin, while the highlight here is the three-level free spins feature.
It takes place, as the title suggests, in a hall, with concrete slabs for the floor, and giant stone columns, and includes stacked Wilds, free spins galore and multipliers.
How to play
There’s the typically wide betting range – play from a mere 20p a spin or up to £100 a pop across all devices.
The 10 to A card symbols are here, alongside four troll icons and the Mountain King himself, the most rewarding icon, shelling out at 40x wager for landing five of a kind.
Hall of the Mountain King Slot special features
The Wild does the standard thing of replacing all other emblems and has the same worth as the Mountain King. Wilds show as stacked on the reels, so you can potentially enjoy wins of up to 1,000x stake just in the base game.
The Scatter symbol is the hammer.
A Multiplier Meter can be seen to the left of the screen, launched when at least one Wild displays on the reels. Multipliers go up one level for each Wild snared. Because Wilds are stacked, larger multipliers can be applied to your wins.
Free spins bonus
As with most slots, this is a genuine highlight. As usual, land three Scatters (on the middle reels) to launch this. More unusually, you move through three different levels, each one with its own features:
- Stage 1: This presents the Symbol Upgrade feature, meaning the Troll King smashes a block in the upgrade meter to the right of your screen. This sees high-value symbols replace less lucrative ones for higher payouts. If the king also breaks the lowest block of the Multiplier Meter, all multipliers are upgraded.
- Stage 2: The Whirling Wild Collection perk releases Whirling Wilds (up to six) above the reels. Again, multipliers may be upgraded.
- Stage 3: Here, the Whirling Wild Drop feature kicks in. All collected Whirling Wilds drop at random on to the reels to give you a hat-trick of free spins.
Return to Player (RTP)
RTP or Return to Player is a generous average here, at 96.29%, however, the high volatility means you can expect some dry spells in between your wins.
As with all of Quickspin’s games, the visuals here are great, and not dissimilar to the animated movie Avatar. Equally, it’s certainly a unique idea to base a game around Grieg’s well-known masterpiece. However, the other side of the coin is that it may not be for you if you have a particular dislike of classical music!
We’ll also admit it may not be the simplest slot game for newcomers to slots. But only you can know if it works for you – give it a go and see for yourself, and let us know how you got on afterwards.
