Only released in March 2020, Yggdrasil’s The Royal Family Slot has five reels and four rows, plus 25 Paylines, which are fixed.
The game has a medieval setting and cartoonish graphics, with the turrets of a regal castle visible in the background beneath a summery blue sky. Plush curtains frame the reels, while a crown decorates one side, a knight’s helmet the other. A relaxed soundtrack completes the ambience.
How to play
Play on desktop or mobile from 10p a pop, or for as much as £200 a go, and bag wins for between three and five matching symbols on a single line, paying only from left to right.
The four playing-card suits are the lesser-paying symbols. There are also four character icons: a knight, king, queen and prince, as represented by the A, K, Q and J emblems, of which the A (the knight) is the most lucrative, at 10x stake for five on a Payline.
The Royal Family Slot special features
A golden chalice serves as your Scatter symbol, while a female harlequin acts as the Wild. As usual, she replaces all the standard icons. Additionally, the royal chest is a further bonus emblem, awarding various different prizes. You’ll only see it on Reel 5.
Land one in the base game to enjoy a coin win of up to 2,500 coins, or a set of free spins. Score extra free whirls for landing chests during the bonus round, or get up to three extra sticky Wilds.
The base game has a dozen different feature prizes, which dish out special perks in free spins mode once you’ve collected them.
These include each reel having its own ‘rare’ collectable prize, which only shows up on that reel. For each free spins session, you can only collect one rare prize.
The seven ‘common’ prizes are one, two or three free spins, similar numbers of starting Wilds – or one low-paying icon gets taken off away during the free spins.
The ‘rare collectable’ prizes include:
- Reel 1: Two extra free spins, 2x multiplier + a couple of starting Wilds (Sword prize)
- Reel 2: 4 x multiplier (Crown prize)
- Reel 3: Two starting Wild reels (Golden egg prize)
- Reel 4: Six starting Wilds (Necklace prize)
- Reel 5: Nine extra wager-free whirls (Key prize)
As ever, Scatters activate this bonus feature. Land three, four or five of the chalices to bank (respectively) eight, 16 or 24 wager-free whirls. There’s no retriggering as such, but you can win more goes from the royal chest if that lands while the feature is ongoing.
Equally, the quartet of character symbols can at random become sticky Wilds should they rock up during a free spin. What’s more, they will remain Wild, locked in place for as long as the perk continues.
You can also launch this round by filling up the collection meter below the reels.
The Royal Family Slot doesn’t incorporate a progressive jackpot, but you can win up to 1,981x stake on every free spin.
Return to Player (RTP)
The Royal Family Slot is a mid-variance game, with an RTP or Return to Player of 96.4% that’s not too shabby at all, plus a healthy 25% hit rate.
The Royal Family is an eminently playable game whose features should offer enough to keep you entertained. It’s also a feel-good affair, with some terrific visuals and slick gameplay.
Admittedly one industry reviewer has dismissed it as a Vikings Go Berzerk clone. But try it for yourself and see what you think.
