Description
Powered by Yggdrasil Gaming, Wilhelm Tell is a five-reel slot with three rows and 20 Paylines produced in collaboration with the Bwin Group. As the name suggests, its inspiration is the legendary medieval Swiss crossbow marksman.
The story goes that he assassinated the tyrant Gessler and, having been sentenced to death along with his son Walter, was given the chance to live by shooting an apple from his boy’s head, which he duly did.
The soundtrack in this April 2019 release is (what else?) the famous 1829 overture bearing the folk hero’s name. The game is set in the Alps at summertime, and the reels are enveloped in the wooden outline of a Swiss cottage for a great look incorporating green hills, snowy peaks plus a chalet or two.
How to play
Play Wilhelm Tell across all devices, from 10p a pop and up to £50 a spin on any device – meaning all budgets are catered for here.
Among the symbols on the reels are the playing-card suits making up the lower payers, while three characters are among the more lucrative icons. These include a knight/guard, Tell himself and Gessler the Tyrant – sadly, crime does pay here, since evil Gessler is the most rewarding emblem, paying 7.5x stake for five on a single Payline.
Special features
Special symbols
The Wild is the lad of the legend with an apple on his head and tied to a tree. (Clearly, he’s Walter, Tell’s son.)
He appears stacked three rows high and replaces all icons save the Scatter. In this way, you can land full-screen Wilds, rewarding you with up to 150x stake during the base game.
Bonus features
Free spins
A definite high point of Wilhelm Tell, this perk is sparked by landing at least three free spins Scatters wherever you like on the reels. Land all five Scatters to enjoy a reward of 500x overall stake.
Once this feature is active, you have three choices to play with:
- One free spin plus a 50x multiplier (win up to 7,500x stake per spin)
- Five free spins plus a 10x multiplier (win up to 1,500x stake per spin)
- 10 free spins plus a 5x multiplier (win up to 1,500x stake per spin)
This bonus can’t be retriggered.
Wild Nudge feature
Essentially, this just means that Wilds can ‘nudge’ to fill up a whole reel if a winning combo is guaranteed. It also helps that Wilds can show up on all reels.
Jackpot
You won’t find a progressive jackpot, but as mentioned above, you can potentially win up to 7,500x stake.
Return to Player (RTP)
You should find this slot low to mid-variance, with a 29.5% volatility score. So you may need some patience, and, as ever, a little luck, while winning potential during the main game is relatively low. RTP or Return to Player in Wilhelm Tell is a welcome 97%.
Verdict
Industry reviewers have praised the design and high-quality graphics of Wilhelm Tell, while also sometimes remarking they found the number and type of features on offer quite basic. Equally, the gameplay is comparatively simple.
Some do feel there’s not enough bonus-game action, and as one reviewer pointed out, why not have an apple-shooting bonus round?
