History of Eintracht Frankfurt

Eintracht Frankfurt was started in 1899, originally as two clubs that later came together. The club made it to the final of the European Cup in 1960, losing in the final to Real Madrid on a scoreline of 7-3. Many consider this to be the most exciting game of football that has been seen.

The club was one of the founding members of the Bundesliga that was created in 1963. They remained in the top flight for the next 33 seasons, mostly ending the year in the top half of the table.

The best finish that Eintracht Frankfurt has ever had in the Bundesliga was third place, a feat they have achieved on five different occasions.

It was in 1996/1997 that Eintracht Frankfurt first got relegated from the Bundesliga. At the time, there were only four teams that had not gotten relegated from the Bundesliga since its first season.

The team then went up and down between the top two divisions for a number of years. After the turn of the century, the club was in a dire financial situation and their struggles continued.

The club's fortunes have been improving as of late. It has made it to the DFB-Pokal final a couple of times in recent years, beating Bayern Munich in the 2018 final. Eintracht Frankfurt also got to the semi-final stage of the UEFA Europa League in 2019, losing to eventual champions Chelsea on penalties.
