New England Patriots

The New England Patriots, one of the most successful NFL teams of all-time, are based in the Greater Boston area. The team plays its home fixtures at the Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The team, originally founded in 1959, plays in the AFC East division.

The rivalry between the Patriots and the New York Jets is one of the fiercest in the league. After head coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady arrived in 2000, the club had a great run, managing to win 16 AFC East titles over the next 18 seasons.

The New England Patriots have set a number of different league records, such as the most wins over the course of a decade, getting an undefeated 16 game regular season in 2007, and having a 21-game winning streak that was the longest of all time. And over the years, the New England Patriots have won the Super Bowl no fewer than six times.

History of the New England Patriots

In 1959, the Boston Patriots were created as the eighth and final franchise for the American Football League. The team was named after the ‘patriots’ who fought against the British colonists during the course of the American Revolution in the Boston area.

In the team's early decades, they were not successful and rarely made it to the play-offs. They won the AFC East for the first time in 1978 and made it to their first Super Bowl in 1985 where they lost heavily to the Chicago Bears.

After 1986, the team did not manage to get to the play-off for another eight seasons.

Turbulent Times

In 1990, the Patriots had their worst season tally, 1-15. Ownership changed a number of times during the ensuing decade, with Robert Kraft taking over as owner in 1994 for $175 million.

The team has sold out every single home game since then and is now one of the most valuable sports organizations in the world, valued at many billions of dollars.

Bill Parcells was the head coach for a few years and brought the Patriots to the Super Bowl in 1996 but they lost to the Green Bay Packers. Pete Carroll then took over for a couple of seasons before Bill Belichick came in.

Start of a Dynasty

The new Gillette Stadium opened in 2002 and the team was then one of the most dominant in the league, with Tom Brady at quarterback.

They captured three Super Bowls in four seasons in the early 2000s and had a perfect unbeaten 16-0 season record in 2007, making them only the fourth team in the NFL to go undefeated in the regular season.

However, the Patriots lost the Super Bowl to the New York Giants that year and lost out to the Giants in the big game once again in 2012.

A Second Coming

In 2015, they won the Super Bowl after beating the Seattle Seahawks. The next year they made a magnificent comeback against the Atlanta Falcons to win the Super Bowl yet again.

They now hold the record for most Super Bowl victories after claiming a sixth title in 2018, beating the Los Angeles Rams. The team also holds the record for most appearances in a Super Bowl.
