Freehold Race Track

Freehold Race Track

Freehold Race Track is in Freehold Borough, New Jersey. It is the oldest racetrack in the entire country, having unofficially started holding races as far back as the 1830s and officially opening in 1854. The track has played host to some of the biggest races over the years. It is now under the ownership of Greenwood Racing and Penn National Gaming. These days, there are two separate racing seasons at the Freehold Raceway.

The first of these seasons begins on New Years Day and it will last until the close of May. The second season will then start in September and it will last until December. The Freehold Raceway is also one of two harness tracks in the state, with the other one being the Meadowlands. There are also stables and training centres that are to be found in the nearby area.

Freehold Race Track Ticket Prices

Ticket prices will vary for races at the Freehold Raceway. The bigger race days will usually carry a higher ticket price than the less popular meetings.

Course Details

The Freehold Raceway has a half-mile track for standardbred harness racing. This is the oldest track in the United States, as well as hosting the fastest races in the harness racing space. There are plans for the site to open up a sports betting facility to go along with its horse racing betting facilities. The dirt surface of the track is very well maintained and the track is nice and wide. The seating capacity is just under 2,500 people.

Tactics to Consider

The Freehold Raceway is one of the fastest tracks around and as a result, you are going to want to back those horses that place an emphasis on speed rather than stamina. This will be a great advantage, as well as those horses that already have a good track record at races at the Freehold Raceway.

Track History

  • The Freehold Raceway is the oldest racetrack in the nation, having started holding races in the 1830s.
  • It was in December 1853 that the Monmouth County Agricultural Society was formed. The following year, there was an annual fair held at the Freehold Raceway and there was also organized harness racing.
  • One of the most popular races in harness racing, the Cane Pace was held at the Freehold Raceway between 1998 and 2010.
  • It was in 1984 that an electrical fire caused a lot of damage at the Freehold Raceway, destroying its main building. This saw tents being used for some time until the re-development was completed in 1986.
  • It was in 1998 that the current owners, Greenwood Racing and Penn National Gaming took over ownership on the track.
  • One of the historic moments in racing that took place at the Freehold Raceway was the first photo finish resulting in a triple dead heat winner for a harness race. This was during a race in October 1953. The speed record at the track was set in 2010 as One More Laugh won the Cane Pace in a time of 1:50:2.
