Run over seven furlongs of Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course in October, the Dewhurst Stakes is Britain’s most important two-year-old race of the year, carrying a £550k+ prize fund and Group One status.
While officially open to both sexes, most leading contenders for the Dewhurst tend to be colts with winners very often considered to be champion two-year-olds and leading players for the following season’s classics, especially the 2000 Guineas.
Founded way back in 1875 and initially called the Dewhurst Plate, this race was traditionally staged on Champions Day before that was moved to Ascot but is now run on Future Champions Day.
The list of past winners of the Dewhurst reads like a who’s who of racing with champions including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Grundy, The Minstrel, Diesis, El Gran Senor, Generous, Dr Devious, Zefonic, Grand Lodge, Shamardal, Sir Percy, Teofilo, New Approach, Frankel, Dawn Approach, Churchill, Too Darn Hot and Pinatubo.
