History of Newmarket Racecourse

The first record of racing taking place at Newmarket Racecourse goes all of the way back to 1667. In 1671, King Charles II became the first and only reigning monarch to ride a horse to victory in a race. Then, the two major races at Newmarket Racecourse were the Town Plate and the King’s Plate.

The Racecourse

There are two different courses that are part of Newmarket Racecourse:

  • the Rowley Mile Course, and
  • the July Course

Both of these tracks are dedicated just to flats racing and the capacity for both of them is 20,000.

The Rowley Mile Course

The Rowley Mile Course is a straight course that is a mile and two furlongs in length. There are only minor undulations two furlongs from the finish, with the last stretch first going downhill and then gently rising uphill.

Most of the Grade I races that take place at Newmarket Racecourse are hosted on the Rowley Mile. Also, most of the races take place in the spring or autumn. It is a wide track and hosts some of the biggest races in the country each year after the Grand National.

The July Course

The July Course is often referred to as the summer course. It has a straight that is a mile in length. Actually, there is a third track but this is unused except for the Newmarket Town Plate race. That race has a lot of history attached to it. But, it is not very important in the grand scheme of modern racing in the country.

The July Course generally is for summer racing and has a couple of Grade I races. That is the Falmouth Stakes and the July Cup. In addition, during the summer, there is a lot of live music at race meetings and the meetings tend to be popular.

Ticket Prices

The price of tickets for race days at Newmarket Racecourse will vary depending on the type of meet. The more popular meetings will usually have higher ticket prices. You will get cheaper tickets if you book in advance online. For instance, these admission tickets start from around the £12 mark.

Notable Races

Newmarket Racecourse is seen as the home of racing for many in Britain. Therefore, there will be no surprise that many top races take place on the track each season. For instance, the two standout races are part of the five Classic Races that take place in the country every year. In total, there are nine Grade I races taking place at Newmarket Racecourse annually including:

The 1,000 Guineas is a flat race open for three-year-old fillies and takes place over a mile. It was first run in 1814 and is a very prestigious race. The accompanying race is the 2,000 Guineas Stakes for thoroughbred fillies or colts. It also takes place over a mile and is the first leg of the Triple Crown of racing, in addition to St Leger and the Derby.

Tactics to Consider

As there are often big fields in races taking place at Newmarket Racecourse, low draws in these fields are a con. That’s because the wide track is for galloping and it will suit larger horses with longer strides. Also, horses need to be able to see out the trip, with those going for home too early often getting caught before the finish. Overall, this course is a great ride and a proper test.
