One of the older races on the Aintree racing calendar, the Topham Chase has been run since 1949 and is currently staged on the Friday of the Grand National meeting, day two of three, every year in early April alongside the Top Novices’ Hurdle, Mildmay Novices’ Chase, the Melling Chase and the Sefton Novices’ Hurdle.
Although staged over a much shorter distance of 2 miles, 5 furlongs, the Topham much like the Grand National is a Grade 3 handicap chase. Featuring 18 of the Grand National fences, this race is often used by those looking for an early National trial as those considered for the big race in future gain experienced around the course.
