Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are a team in the NFL that are currently based in the metropolitan area of Los Angeles. They are a part of the AFC West and their home games take place at the SoFi Stadium which is in Inglewood, California, which is shared with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Chargers were first started back in 1959 as a team based in Los Angeles. After one season in the American Football League (AFL), the organization moved down to San Diego in 1961 and became the San Diego Chargers. The team has been playing again in Los Angeles since 2017.

History of the Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers was started in 1959 and played in the AFL for the first time in 1960. The original owner of the team was Barron Hilton, the son of the founder of Hilton Hotels. After one season in Los Angeles, the team moved down to San Diego in 1960, where they would remain for 56 seasons.

The team saw success in its early years in the AFL and captured the AFL Championship in 1963. Numerous star players were a part of the high-scoring Chargers team. After the AFL and NFL merger in 1970, the Chargers went into the AFC West.

The team struggled for most of the decade before going on a decent string of seasons in the early-1980s. The offense turned into one of the most exciting in the history of the NFL, with many individual and team records set. They got to the play-offs four seasons and a row, but lost out in two AFC Championship games, thus failing to get to the Super Bowl.

A first Super Bowl Appearance

It was in 1994 that under head coach Bobby Ross, the Chargers made it to its first-ever Super Bowl appearance, and it's only one so far. However, they were unsuccessful and lost to the Steve Young-led San Francisco 49ers on a scoreline of 49-26. After the 1995 season, the team would struggle to make the play-offs of the next decade.

Philip Rivers was drafted in 2004 and would be the Chargers quarterback until 2019. They went on to capture the AFC West five times between 2004 and 2009, but failed to make much further progress. Over the past decade, the team has only made the play-offs a couple of times.

Move Back to Los Angeles

In 2017, the team returned to Los Angeles despite the Rams also moving back to Los Angeles from St. Louis. The Chargers move was not welcomed by a lot of people in both San Diego and Los Angeles. Attendance numbers have been struggling since the move.

Notable Players

Over the years, the Chargers have seen some great players as part of the team. While none of them has been rewarded with a Super Bowl for their efforts in a Chargers uniform, they have left a lasting legacy in many cases. To date, there have seen four players with retired numbers. They are Dan Fouls, Lance Alworth, LaDainian Tomlinson and Junior Seau.

A number of Hall of Famers have also played at some stages of their careers of the Chargers, including Ron Mix, Johnny Unitas, Deacon Jones, John Mackey, Larry Little, Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner and Fred Dean. The current team is in a rebuilding phase after moving on from long-term quarterback Philip Rivers.
