Description

Mississippi Stud Poker, which you can play at 888 casinos, is one of a new generation of novelty table games aimed at younger players through being easier than most to master, and by having an above-average house edge.

In keeping with other poker-based games, you play against the house dealer, not your fellow players. Hands, ranked according to standard poker ratings, are compared not to a dealer’s, though, but against a paytable and based on your own hand’s results. But prepare for some thrilling, fast-paced action, not to mention an excellent RTP.

What’s more, it’s all kept pretty straightforward – this is five-card poker in which you’re simply aiming to form a poker hand from a pair of Jacks or better.

How to play

The good news is that the rules aren’t overly complex. Equally, the good range of coin sizes caters for high and low-stakes players alike.

How to play Mississippi Stud Poker

You’ll typically be playing with up to five other players, from a conventional 52-card deck on the familiar emerald-green felt card table.

Cards hold standard poker values i.e. ascending in numerical order then J, Q and K, with the Ace being the highest card.

Place an Ante wager to start with, and then the dealer gives you two cards before three community cards are dealt. These are known as the flop, the turn and the river.

Next, you can fold or make a flop bet worth either 3x or 1x your Ante bet before the flop card is revealed.

At this point, you can either fold or place a turn bet, again worth 1x or 3x Ante.

After the turn card is uncovered, the same procedure applies for making a river bet, before all payouts are made according to the paytable.

Special features

Top-class bonus action

Mississippi Stud’s extra game also lets you bet on a three-card bonus, a side bet that the community cards will create particular three-card hands.

Typical paytable

  • Royal Flush: Pays at 500 to 1
  • Straight Flush: Pays at 100 to 1
  • Four of a Kind: Pays at 40 to 1
  • Full House: Pays at 10 to 1
  • Flush: Pays at 6 to 1
  • Straight: Pays at 4 to 1
  • Three of a Kind: Pays at 3 to 1
  • Two Pairs: Pays at 2 to 1
  • Pairs of Jacks through Aces: Pays at 1 to 1
  • Pair of Sixes through Tens is a push (or tie)

Unfortunately, any other kind of hand is seen as a losing one.

Return to Player (RTP)

As mentioned above, theoretical RTP is pretty strong here, ranging from 96.4% to 99.3%, bearing in mind that this is a high-volatility game.

Verdict

This game’s simplicity has certainly won it a strong following, and, in a crowded marketplace, it stands out as one where, if you hold the right cards, you can give the house a good punishing!

As ever, it’s a good plan to try it out in demo mode first to familiarise yourself with the mechanics of the game before parting with any actual money. Do the same if you’re trying out a new strategy.
