FSV Mainz 05, started in 1905, is located in Mainz, Rhineland-Palatinate. The team has been playing in the top flight of German football for the past decade and its predominant rivals are 1. History of FSV Mainz 05

1905

In 1905, Mainz 05 started after a couple of previous failed attempts. It merged with a couple of local sports clubs around the first couple of decades of its existence. The club was in the amateur ranks for many years.

1970s and 1980s

It was in the second tier of football in Germany for many years, withdrawing in the late 1970s and 1980s due to financial difficulties. However, it was at the end of the 1980s that they returned to the professional game and returned to the second tier Bundesliga II.

They narrowly missed out on promotions a few times around the turn of the century, including losing out after conceding a 93rd-minute goal in the final game in the season to lose out.

2011

However, they finally got promoted to the top flight under the management of Jurgen Klopp. They survived three seasons before getting relegated. They returned to the top flight a couple of years later. The best finish that Mainz 05 has had in the Bundesliga was the fifth place in 2011, earning them a spot in the UEFA Europa League.

2008

Jurgen Klopp played for FSV Mainz 05 on 325 occasions during his career before taking over as a manager when returning. He left the club in 2008 to take over as the Borussia Dortmund manager where he saw a lot of success. He went on to manage Liverpool FC, winning a Champions League and Premier League title in the English club.

Mainz 05 has been playing its home games at the Opel Arena. This was newly opened in 2011 and it holds just over 34,000 fans. The club had been playing at the Bruchwegstadion since 1928 that only held about 20,000 fans. Mainz is one of the three main carnival cities in Germany, along with the likes of Cologne and Dusseldorf. The club's reserve teams have also seen some success over the years.

Honours

Having taken part in the Europa League or UEFA Cup on four occasions, the best it has done is finished in 3rd place in the group stakes in 2016/2017. The club was crowned as the German amateur champion in 1982 and has won some reserve and youth competitions in more recent years.
