Max-Morlock-Stadion is a football arena in Nuremberg, Germany, situated beside the Nuremberg Arena and the Zeppelinfeld. Open since 1928, it is the home ground of the 1. FC Nürnberg Bundesliga club. It has also hosted numerous notable international games over the years, including World Cup ties.
History of Max-Morlock-Stadion
Max-Morlock-Stadion was first opened in 1928 as Städtisches Stadion and has undergone several name changes since then.
Starting in 1933, the Nazi Party – officially known as the National Socialist German Worker’s Party – began to use the stadium as a place to practice marching for the Hitler Youth.
One of the largest events held by the Nazi Sports Body, the Deutsche Kampfspiele, took place at the Max-Morlock-Stadion in July 1934.
In 1963, the decision was made to redevelop and upgrade the stadium in order for it to become fully compliant with the requirements of the Bundesliga.
Various further renovations were carried out between the years 1987 and 1991 with more significant redevelopment in 2002. This was to prepare the stadium to host matches for the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 2006 World Cup.
This was done at a cost of €56.2m, split between the building society that managed the arena and the city of Nürnberg. This change saw the ground’s capacity rising to over 48,500 and included a lowering of the playing field so that all seats in the Max-Morlock-Stadion would have unrestricted views.
Notable events
Many different types of events have taken place at the Max-Morlock-Stadion over the years, including numerous high-profile music acts, as well as games in both the 1972 and 2006 World Cups, the 2005 FIFA Confederations Cup and the 1967 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.
Current facilities
The Max-Morlock-Stadion has been modernized even more since 2002, and now has first-class facilities for both players and officials.
There is an extensive press area and three television studios, a VIP zone with room enough for 800 people and parking spaces for 15,000 cars.
The stadium can also host track and field events up to international standard. It has undersoil heating and a complete backup of the power system.
