Werder Bremen is a sports club that is found in Bremen, Free Hanseatic City of Bremen. The club was started in 1899 and its main sports team is its football side.

They play in the top tier of football in Germany and has the record for the most seasons playing in the Bundesliga, as well as having won the third most league titles in the history of the league.

They have been crowned as champions on four occasions, as well as have six DFB-Pokal titles, one DFL-Ligapokal title and three times having won the DFL-Supercup.

Werder Bremen has also captured the European Cup Winners’ Cup on one occasion. The club has been playing its home games at the Weserstadion since 1909 and the clubs main rival is Hamburger SV.

History of Werder Bremen

1899

Founded in 1899 by a bunch of students, the name ‘Werder’ came from the German word that means river peninsula.

1900

There was representation for Werder Bremen at the German Football Association founding in 1900 and the club was successful on a local level in its first few years in existence.

As time went on, a number of sports teams were added including the likes of tennis, cricket, chess, baseball and cricket.

After the Second World War, there was no professional football allowed for some time, so players had to work at normal jobs and play football on the side.

1961

In 1961, Werder Bremen won its first DFB-Pokal. They were one of the 16 founding members of the Bundesliga in 1963. Werder Bremen won this title in its second year in existence.

1988

It was in 1988 that it won the Bundesliga for the second time, also winning the title in 1993 and 2004.

2004

It has also been runner-up in the league on seven occasions. It was in 2004 that they won a domestic double, capturing the league title as well as the DFB-Pokal.

2009

It was in 1980 that Werder Bremen was relegated out of the top tier for the first time, winning the second tier straight away and getting back to the top flight. The club got to the final of the UEFA Cup in 2009. Losing out to Shakhtar Donetsk in extra time.

The club was known for developing a lot of players during the 21st century before selling them on for big money, including:

  • Torsten Frings,
  • Diego,
  • Claudio Pizarro and
  • Mesut Ozil.

The club has been entrenched in relegation battles a couple of times in recent years but has always pulled through.

Werder Bremen has been playing at the same home ground since 1909 when a stadium was built. The first major renovation came in 1926, with many other renovations taking place over the subsequent decades. For a few years after the Second World War, only American sports like American football and baseball were played at the stadium.

It was in 1992 that Werder Bremen was the first team in the German top flight to install skyboxes, with undersoil heating also coming into place. The running track was taken away to improve the capacity, with the current stadium holding a little more than 42,000.

The long-running main rival for Werder Bremen is that of other Northern Germany club Hamburger SV, partaking in the Nordderby. The two cities are the biggest in the region.

Some of the other rivals include Bayern Munich and Schalke 04 as the latter have poached a lot of Werder Bremen’s promising players in recent years. There are a number of ultra groups that are part of Werder Bremen.
