With the tier system for league football in Spain, the Spanish Segunda Division B lies in third place in terms of superiority. It is a unique structure in which four different groups make up this exciting league. Each of these Spanish Segunda Division B groups will have twenty separate clubs within them.
Some of the teams will be the reserve sides for giants of the domestic game, while others will be senior teams that are looking to work up the tiers. The Royal Spanish Football Federation oversees and maintains the Spanish Segunda Division B throughout the course of the season.
The leading league in Spanish football is La Liga, playing host to the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona. Then there is the Segunda Division, followed by the Spanish Segunda Division B and then the Tercera Division.
There are many great players in each of these leagues. The Spanish Segunda Division B, in particular, is a great place for younger players to get attuned to playing football at senior level, eventually progressing up the rankings as time goes on.
The Spanish Segunda Division B Historical Background
The very first running of the Spanish Segunda Division B was way back in 1929. This saw it being the third tier of league football in the nation for many decades. Then for a certain period, it was changed to being the fourth tier of football in the country. This was changed in time for the 1977/1978 season. It became the third tier once more and the Tercera Division was then installed as the fourth division of league football.
In the beginning days, there were two different groups for the Spanish Segunda Division B. For some years, there was just one group of 22 teams competing in the Spanish Segunda Division B. Starting in the 1987/1988 season there was the introduction of the groups system, each of the groups containing a total of 20 clubs.
How does the division operate?
These days, there are still four groups that compile together in the form of the Spanish Segunda Division B. There are twenty teams playing in these groups each season. Four teams will ultimately get promoted and four teams will get relegated from the total of 80 teams playing in the Spanish Segunda Division B each season.
To get promoted up into the Segunda Division, the top four teams in the league tables of each of the four groups will take part in a playoff series. This series will ultimately end in the four best performing sides earning promotion. These promoted teams will then be replaced in the Spanish Segunda Division B by four teams that get relegated from the Segunda Division.
There are special rules in place for reserve teams that are playing in the Spanish Segunda Division B. A reserve team is not allowed to get promoted out of the Spanish Segunda Division B if its senior side is already in the Segunda Division. Also, if the senior team gets relegated down into the Spanish Segunda Division B, the reserve team will then be automatically relegated down into the Tercera Division.
There is also a playoff series in place for the bottom four teams in each of the Spanish Segunda Division B groups. These games will be over two legs and will see four teams in total losing their place in the Spanish Segunda Division B.
Some teams will get saved if a reserve team ends up getting automatically relegated out of the Spanish Segunda Division B in a given season due to its senior team playing in the Spanish Segunda Division B the following season. Currently, in the Spanish Segunda Division B Group 4, there is just a single reserve team plying its trade. This is Cadiz B.
