Description
Sword of Khans Slots is a five-reel, 10-Payline slot offering from games creator Thunderkick. It’s a visually stunning affair based on the twelfth and thirteenth-century all-conquering emperor Genghis Khan.
Join his mighty warriors and roam the sweeping Mongolian steppe without even leaving home in this good looker of a game, and enjoy perks including expanding symbols, free spins and increasing multipliers, not to mention the chance to win a whopping 10,000x stake.
The reels are incorporated within a classic pagoda-style Mongolian temple, while the background is snowy mountain peaks.
How to play
Play on desktop or your mobile device, from 10p to £100 a spin – whatever your attitude to risk, it’s catered for here.
In all, there are 10 symbols in Sword of Khans. The standard playing card values (not adapted to the theme) 10 though Ace, are there alongside helmets, shields, armour and Khan himself. As ever, the cards are the lower-paying icons while, in ascending order of payouts, the more lucrative ones are the shield, armour and helmet. Genghis pays out the most, at up to 250x stake.
As usual, win by landing at least three lower-paying or a couple of higher-paying icons on one of the 10 Paylines.
Sword of Khans Slots special features
Special symbols
The sword symbol serves as both Wild and Scatter, although interestingly the Mongols’ weapon of choice was apparently not a sword but the bow and arrow. It replaces all symbols in both the base game and bonus round apart from any expanding symbol wins in the latter (see below).
Free spins
Launch this feature by bagging at least three of the sword symbols. Your reward is a random number of free whirls, from five to 15. While this round is active, even if you gain just a couple of the all-important sword icons, that’s enough to retrigger further free spins.
Expanding wins
If you’ve played Book of Dead from Play’n GO, you’ll already know how this one works.
Any symbol other than the Scatter/Wild sword is the randomly chosen expanding icon while the free spins round is ongoing, and it completely takes over whichever reel it pops up on.
The difference with Book of Dead is that the increasing multipliers which feature here mean that if the chosen symbol is already an actively expanding one, a multiplier of up to 3x applies. (And, in fact, this is the twist that really sets Sword of Khans apart.)
Fill the grid with five expanded icons at maximum multiplier and the game can pay out 10,000x stake in a single spin.
A useful bar along the bottom of the reels lets you keep tabs on which icons are special, plus any relevant multipliers.
Progressive jackpot
You won’t find a progressive jackpot here.
Return to Player (RTP)
Frankly, the RTP or Return to Player is one downside of this game. It’s a little on the low side at 95.36%.
Verdict
Players have high expectations of Thunderkick’s games, thanks to their consistently well thought out slots. We reckon Sword of Khans is no exception and well worth another look, especially if you can live with that slightly below-par RTP, while its features give it a fresh feel.
