Elland Road Stadium

Elland Road is the home stadium for Leeds United and is based in West Yorkshire. It has always been their home ground of the club that was set up in 1919.

Currently, it is the 14th largest football stadium in the country and has hosted many big games over the years, including Euro 96 games and fixtures in the 2015 rugby union World Cup.

It is also often used for musical performances, with acts such as U2, Kaiser Chiefs and Queen playing at the venue over the years.

History of Elland Road Stadium

1920

Elland Road was originally the ground for a rugby club before football began to be played at the ground. There was a stand built just before the turn of the 20th century.

A number of teams played on the ground for a number of years before, including Leeds City. It was in 1920 that Leeds United, a newly created club, bought Elland Road for £250 from the Yorkshire Amateurs.

1953

There were some improvements made during the early years, but for a number of decades, there wasn't much done with it. Amidst the Second World War, Elland Road was used by the army for admin purposes. Floodlights were installed at the grounds in 1953, with the lights at the time said to be the most expensive in the country, having cost £7,000.

1956

A fire took place in 1956 that saw the West Stand destroyed, as well as a portion of the pitch. Many other aspects of the facility were also affected by the fire damage, with the entire damage estimated to be about £100,000 worth.

The insurance for the club did not cover this damage so a public appeal was needed to rebuild the destroyed facility. A lot more improvements were made to the ground over the next few decades, making it one of the best grounds in the country.

1982

It was in 1982 that Leeds United ended up selling Elland Road to the Leeds City Council. This led to extension renovations being done, with these developments opening in the early 1990s.

1994

It was turned into an all-seater stadium in time for the start of the 1994/1995 season. A number of international games took place at Elland Road over these years. Ever since then, Elland Road has been kept in good conditions, with improvements being made as needed.

The layout the stadium

The Don Revie Stand is at the north portion of the ground and it is named after the club’s most successful manager. There are 7,000 seats and this was opened in 1994.

The East Stand can seat 14,900 people and is the newest portion of the stadium. It has two tiers and was opened in 1993/1994, with the work costing about £5.5 million. This made it the second biggest cantilever stand in the globe.

The Norman Hunter South Stand was constructed in 1974 and has a capacity of about 5,000. The John Charles Stand is the oldest stand in Elland Road that had two tiers when it was built in 1975 following the fire. It has a capacity of 1,000 and has a number of executive boxes.

Leeds United

Leeds United is known for having a passionate fan base, with it being the only big club in the region. It has long been a top-flight team and has won the First Division title on three occasions. They also have won an FA Cup, League Cup, two Charity Shields and got to a European Cup final in 1975 but lost to Bayern Munich in controversial fashion.

The golden era for the club was in the 1960s and 1970s when Don Revie was the manager. In recent decades, the club has been in the second and third tiers of English football, but they managed to win the Championship and get promoted to the Premier League for the 2020/2021 season.
